This library page holds a collection of ultra precise hand crafted
antialiased bitmapped fonts. These offer exceptional legibility
at very low font sizes or for use with lower resolution bitmaps.
These are well suited for eBay photo image retouching or for
improving .GIF banners or for development of eBook readers.
No subpixel or other display restricting techniques are used.
Per this example and this intermediate transfer.
Fonts are presented as PostScript arrays that can be used with
this Bitmap Typewriter program to create cut-and paste typography
that can go directly into Paint or similar .BMP editor programs.
There are three files associated with each font. The font file might
have a name like f0406bg.txt and consists of a PostScript proc that
defines a 256 entry array of arrays. Each character array has the
needed number of width and height pixels.
A value of 0.999 means no change of background color. A 0.000 value
means full replacement of background color. Intermediate values are
alpha blended. Arrays are built from the top of the character down
to handle Q tails and lower case "g" characters and such.
The code or "generator" file might have a name like f0406bg.psl
and is the PostScript routine to generate the actual anti-aliasing data
values. The letter "A" is fit to the bitbox with unity gain. The other
characters have their gains and offsets adjusted to best fit their most
appropriate available bitbox.
To use this file, change the data values and send it to Acrobat Distiller
using my Gonzo routines. Per these guidelines. Initial font output is
via the log file. This gets renamed before your final use. Adjustments
(such as darkening the tail on a Q) can also be made at this time.
The final map file might have a name like f0406bg.pdf for a 4-wide
by 6 high bitmap and shows you how the generator file has positioned
the input typography against each bitbox for the best fit.
Fonts at present may be only partially populated, consisting of mostly
numerals and upper case letters. Other bitbox variations and more
characters may get added as their use need arises.
